Mary Kom on April 12 stepped down as the Chef-de-Mission for the Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics citing “personal reasons”. A replacement is expected to be named by the IOA soon. Thanking the Indian Olympic Association for placing its faith in her, Mary admitted it was embarrassing but was left with no choice.

Mary is the first female boxer in boxing history to have captured six world titles. The five-time Asian champion was the first female boxer from India to take home a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.

Mary Kom, a six-time world champion, has been out of action since she tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) after twisting her left knee during the Commonwealth Games selection trials last year. She underwent a reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL tear last August but hasn't competed or trained since.

She is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals.
